Client: Brodie Engineering
Architect: CMM Architects
Cost: £1.3m

Refurbishment and extension of offices, workshop and track accesses.  Contaminated land remediation.  Steel framed extension with reinforced concrete inspection pit and traverser pit.  New surface water SUDS drainage system installation.

The project involved the extension and refurbishment of a Victorian blonde sandstone Engine Shed fabric and structure to preserve its historic significance.  The extension was designed such that there was a complete detachment from the original building.

Whilst we were not required to observe significant building preservation methods by the planning authority, the Client chose to adopt a sympathetic approach as the building was respected by the organisation.

The existing entrances had been significantly altered in the past and further opening out of this was required to provide operational space.  It was decided that, rather than demolish the gable and re-build, the piers between the existing openings were supported off the new frame.  This minimum interference was achieved, together with a commercially advantageous construction cost.
