Ocean Mist

Ocean Mist

Will Rudd Davidson, acting as Lead Designers, provided a full structural package for refurbishment of the existing boat, to be permanently moored at the Shore, Leith.

The steamer, ‘Ocean Mist’ was built in 1919 by George Brown & Co, Greenock. It was originally named ‘Samuel Green’ and was built for the Navy, but the 1st World War was over by the time it was completed, so it was sold as a yacht.

The proposal entailed refurbishing the existing vessel to accommodate a permanently moored bar restaurant, to include an additional internal upper storey. The structural intervention was more aligned to naval architecture and required a different approach in terms of structural framing for this “building”.

Welded steel plates, formed in double curvature to extend the hull, stiffening ribs and steel structural Tee joists forming the structure to the floor plate, providing conventional accommodation in an unconventional way !
