The Registers, Edinburgh
Client: Chris Stewart Group
Located in a prominent urban site in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town World Heritage Site and Conservation Area, the Project includes a comprehensive redevelopment of the under utilised area in order to bring new life to the existing, redundant buildings and surrounding lanes. The Project involves the redevelopment of existing buildings located on West Register Street and has a significant presence on the South East corner of St. Andrew Square.
20 West Register Street
‘The Mint Building’ situated at 20 West Register Street is a Grade A office development site designed by the award winning Hoskins Architects. Sitting alongside The Edinburgh Grand in the heart of Edinburgh’s City Centre, the Project was completed in 2019 and offers 60,000ft2 of office space.
The mixed use development carefully knits together the requirements for Category A listed office space and a high quality restaurant, café, bar, and retail units into a complex, historic setting, while revealing the fine details of the listed Venetian Gothic warehouse that sits within the site. A complex construction sequence was utilised which involved the retention of the existing façade and construction of the new steel frame on the site footprint in tandem with one another. New build elements respond to the scale, proportion and character of adjacent buildings, streets and lanes, with natural stone cladding carefully interspersed with precast concrete bands and unique steel bracketry tying the cladding back to the primary structure.
The Edinburgh Grand
The Edinburgh Grand which opened its doors in 2018 consists of 50 luxury serviced apartments complete with a private members club, gym and commercial units. This £15m redevelopment of a Grade A historic banking landmark was previously occupied by The National Bank of Scotland. A single storey extension was included in the renovation to create additional rooms and a penthouse suite. The external terrace provides fantastic views over St. Andrew Square and the wider cityscape.
The Gleneagles Club
Ennismore, the owners of the iconic Perthshire Estate that is Gleneagles Hotel, have taken over two empty premises on West Register Street formerly occupied by The Bank of Scotland which will be converted into a luxury 33 bed hotel, members club and leisure destination.
The alterations and extension to these significant buildings have required careful and considered thought in the design, detailing and execution of the proposed structural solution. These include discrete major structural interventions internally, addition of a glazed rooftop extension as well as newbuild steel frame extension and pavilion building within the footprint of an historic RC frame extension.
We are currently on site at The Gleneagles Club with an estimated completion date of August 2021.
