I was one of the the founding members of Will Rudd associates when we started off in 1982. I am the Founding Director of our Glasgow Office which started in 2000. My primary role is to lead the overall business activities in the Glasgow office and work together with the leadership teams in Glasgow and Edinburgh to ensure our core business remains strong and healthy, grows sustainably, and strategically positioned to maximise opportunity. I am also an active participant in our day to day engineering activities as a Registered Certifier of Structural Designs, allowing me to keep a close eye on design quality and efficiency. I lead our brand management and business visibility.
I have 40 years’ experience in Structural and Civil Engineering, covering projects from large multi-million pound projects to those on a domestic scale. I have a deep understanding of design, approvals and procurement process of new build, renovation and conservation/preservation construction projects together with infrastructure developments, all from inception / master planning stage through to construction and handover stage. I act as Lead Designer and/or Project Manager when required. My design expertise extends well beyond the core superstructure, foundations, infrastructure and geotechnical disciplines to tall buildings, façade engineering, pressed metal structural framing systems, renewable energy, temporary works design and coordination, conservation engineering, structural surveying and investigation and acting as reporter and expert witness.
My experience covers all sectors in the construction industry, including public works, hotels, student accommodation, historic buildings, public art installations, residential, health care, education, coastal engineering, offices, process engineering, paper and printing, manufacturing, roads, drainage and infrastructure projects.
I have a great affinity with the arts, and am driven to achieve aesthetic as well as engineering excellence. The more challenging a task, the more enthused I become. I am very aware that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I enjoy learning, reading and discussing opinions on what pleases or what doesn’t; preferably with a glass of Shiraz. Nevertheless, when it comes to project based building design, the Architect is always the boss!
I love music and play the piano whenever time allows; achieving Grade 8 was certainly a challenge. I compose music at amateur level to a reasonable degree of success, again when time permits.
My favourite sport is judo. I have played judo ever since I was 8 years old with a few gaps achieving 1st Dan (another stiff challenge). I now assist in coaching kids at my local club.
